Our children forget how to speak

02/03/2024 | According to a data analysis by the KKH health insurance company, the number of children between the ages of 6 and 18 with speech disorders increased by almost 60% from 2012 to 2022. Almost one in ten boys and one in 15 girls are now affected. Among 15- to 18-year-olds, speech disorders increased by 144%, more so among girls than among boys. “Chatting and liking are not a replacement for direct communication,” writes the KKH.

the cause as The experts diagnose being, in addition to the long-standing triggers of speech disorders, the excessive use of digital devices and the associated decline in direct, oral communication. The pandemic (or the pandemic measures; NH) acted as an “accelerator”.

It wasn't just the children who spoke less on their own. The parents and other people around them are also too busy with smartphones to talk to them.

The health insurance company warns against taking these problems lightly. “Language and speaking are the cornerstones of a child’s development,” says Vijitha Sanjivkumar from the KKH’s medicine competence team. “Language competence is one of the keys to communicating needs, thoughts and feelings, to opening up the world, understanding it and helping to shape it socially.”

Therefore the urgent appeal to all parents and other people who have to do with children. Put your smartphones far away when you are with children. Don't give them the message that the normal situation is for two or more people together to talk to others or stare at a piece of technology and, at best, talk about what they see on it. Talk to them. Play with them. It will be very good for you too.

Scientists are calling for a moratorium on digitalization in daycare centers and schools
02/01/2024 | The articles on the misery of schools and the associated shortage of skilled workers have met with great interest. That's why I would like to point out an informative website of the Society for Education and Knowledge eV, with many current texts and references to studies on everyday pedagogical life and pedagogical theory. There is also a worthy supportable manifesto from scientists calling for a moratorium on digitalization in daycare centers and schools, which I have reproduced here in short form.

The shortage of skilled workers from the perspective of a secondary school teacher
01/30/2024 | Companies complain about a shortage of skilled workers. Politicians are making every effort to remedy this through the immigration of foreign workers. At the same time, many local young people, especially those with a migrant background, lack the skills and drive to complete training and become skilled workers. A secondary school teacher describes the students' situation, the causes of their problems and possible remedies by the school and companies. He does it anonymously because school administrators don't like it when you talk about things.
